About the workshop:

What does molecular gastronomy and biofabrication have in common and what do these techniques have to do with the fabrication of soft robots and inflatable wearable structures?

In this workshop we will investigate the common materials and techniques of molecular gastronomy and biofabrication as we bring them together for the fabrication of soft bio robots and inflatables. We will be exploring and working with natural polymers through cooking up, casting, heat sealing and fusing, curing and inflating our biomaterials.

Participants can expect to experiment with DIY and DIWO/DIT biofabrication techniques as we will be co-crafting some of our own alginate and gelatine bioplastics and investigating their material properties as wearable and technical textile pieces.

Workshop language: English

Free of charge limited to 10 participants

Marisa Satsia is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher specializing in medical and biological arts based in Nicosia, Cyprus. She is an amateur biologist with a research interest in bio art, molecular gastronomy and soft robotics. Her work re-imagines and challenges the future developments of biotechnologies of life and self health/care, and makes biology more accessible through the adoption of DIY processes, techniques, materials and tools. Marisa holds an MSc (2016) in Medical Art from the Centre of Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee, and has completed the fabricademy program in 2022 at the Basque Biodesign Centre, in Bilbao, Spain. She has taught multiple courses and workshops, including Medical Bodies (School of Machines, Making and Make Believe, 2020), Creative Biology (CYENS Thinker Maker Space, 2021), Biofabricated Soft Robots and Inflatables (Summer of School of Bits and Atoms with the Transmedia Research Institute, 2023). In 2022 Marisa founded the first open and communal DIY biolab in Cyprus, BioCuriosities lab, which she continues to develop as the local hacker and maker community is continuously growing.
